Observer Food Monthly Awards 2012

Dad said I could blog about the award on Friday but I thought it was still a secret until it was in the Observer Food Magazine today. The ceremony was in London and I was given the award by Gizzi Erskine and Jay Rayner.

There was a big round of applause and some people stood up. It was very kind of everyone. I am glad I didn't have to say anything into the microphone because I was very nervous. Lots of people wished me congratulations afterwards. I was very lucky to win and Hollow Legs
and James Ramsden were in the final with me. I think I won because of all the children who will get a school dinner from Mary's Meals because of the blog.

I think dad recognised more people at the party than me but he didn't know everybody. I tried lots of different foods afterwards and really liked the Jhal Muri but I needed water afterwards because it was spicy! My favourite person to meet was John who won the Great British Bake Off. He was lovely.

I talked to so many people about Malawi and Mary's Meals that I went to bed really late and fell asleep on a minister's sofa in the Foreign Office on Friday. It was worth it though. I am home now and the plate is above my kitchen door. It is next to a mouse and a home made fish. I like it there.

  7. Congratulations Martha! I really like your blog and it is so great so see what you've done during the last months! Not many girls of your age can say that they helped build a school kitchen in Malawi, got awards and have a blog with 8 milion views!
    Take care!

  12. Congratulations. You deserve this award and I appreciate your hard work. I teach at a small college in the USA and I use your work when I talk to my students about how to be activists about the issues that matter to them. Thank you.

  14. People (including me) were tipping you to win well before you raised all that money! You won because you have an original, well written, engaging blog. The way you have used that to raise money and focus attention on the needs of children in Malawi is incredible - but if it wasn't a good blog in the first place, no one would have taken any notice! So you should be very proud of yourself.

  20. I got an email today from "upworthy" with an article about your blog and decided to come check it out. I'm a 33 year old mother of 6. Four of my children are biologically mine and live with me and dad, my other two are my stepchildren and they each live with their own maternal family.

You are a very smart and beautiful young girl. My nine year old daughter is too. She's in fourth grade at a public school in Henderson, Nevada, USA. Henderson is just outside of Las Vegas, must the famous gambling city of the world! My nine year old daughter's name is Seneca. She is a very picky eater with a weak stomach when it comes to food. If something doesn't please her taste she will gag and sometimes worse! She hates school lunches! If they're serving a meal she does not like, she will not eat it and come home hungry. Even at home, she hardly eats any variety. She makes her own meals because she won't eat what the family is having about 90% of the time. She likes chicken nugget meals from most fast food restaurants and mozzarella cheese sticks and French fries. At home she eats things like chips and salsa, chips with shredded cheese on top not melted, and she doesn't like cheese sauce/ dip. She likes grilled cheese sandwiches, some kinds of hotdogs, ramen noodles (but only the chicken flavor, some banquet brand meals, some kids cuisine brand meals, Salisbury steak family dinner (but only the on-cor brand). She likes cheese quesadillas. She likes macaroni and cheese, but only Kraft brand and only from the box and cooked on the stovetop, no microwavable kind. She likes mashed potatoes, but only made from potato flakes, she won't eat them mashed from potatoes. She likes pizza, but only cheese pizza and she's picky about the brand or restaurant too. She likes bread, French bread, bread sticks, garlic bread, cheesy garlic bread, pizza crusts, but she won't eat wheat bread. She also does not like any grain bread. She likes potato chips and tortilla chips, she's not too picky about those. She doesn't like any fruits or vegetables except for Clementines. She likes ranch dip for her chicken nuggets and has cried and refused to eat her nuggets without ranch dip. She may have eaten fish sticks before and maybe tater tots? As you can see, her diet is terrible!

I wish she were more interested in food and that her school offered better selections that she liked. I think she tried the school burritos a time or two but is usually nauseated afterwards.

When she gets home from school I will show her your page.
