Drawn

I absolutely totally forgot my camera again today. Well I didn't totally forget it because I got it into my school bag but not from my school bag to the lunch hall. I was so keen to eat I dashed out of my class leaving the camera behind. So today I have drawn my lunch for you on the computer!

In case you can't tell I had carrot and coriander soup to start which is still my favourite and I would pick it over chocolate cake any day. The soup was so hot after one mouthful I nearly burnt my mouth so I had it after my main. I chose an omelette over the sausages because I haven't had it for a while. It was really nice and tasted of cheese. With it I had roast potatoes which are never crunchy, radishes, pineapple and cucumber. The radishes were crunchy and spicey! I ate absolutely everything but I was too full for fruit.

Food-o-meter- 9/10
Mouthfuls- thirty something
Courses- starter/main
Health Rating- 8/10
Price- £2
Pieces of hair- 0
Wristband- Yellow
Mary's Meal Total-170 children fed for a year or 25% of a kitchen. Thank you!

I am getting excited about meeting all the people with Nick Nairn this week to talk about food. It's going to be awesome!

Danny's mum sent in this picture from Alba in Spain (20 seconds!) because Danny is only 10 months old and is at nursery.

I love the cute teddy bear bowls! LEFT: lunch one consists of white flesh peaches, strawberries and yogurt melts under they also have a meal which was cous-cous, broccoli, cucumbers and roasted salmon RIGHT: day two lunch he had poached apple pears, strawberries and blue berries, for the meal he had pieces of swede and fresh garden peas.

It costs 1 euro, about 80p, and I think I could eat three but there again I am nine not 10 months old!

  1. I am very impressed with Danny's lunch. In the states most 10 month olds are still eating puree, I think. A daycare meal looks nothing like that around here! You should see if you can get your school's carrot soup recipe. Any carrot soup that a nine-year-old would rather have than chocolate cake must be really good!

    1. There is an approach called baby led weaning - it effectively gets rid of the puree stage, babies don't go onto solids until about 6 months - totally driven by them, they are ready for it physically (mouth and hand manipulation)and in terms of their own motivation in terms of learning to eat different food flavours and textures - both my children were provided this approach and they were eating this type of food at this stage - I suspect the true Mediterranean upbringing, family groups, eating together at the table etc encourages this too.

    2. Oh - I have just seen that the photo has been taken from someone else's website.....shame. Perhaps the nursery follow the same line but she didn't get photos of hte actual nursey food?

  2. So lovely of you to draw you lunch for us on the computer! And as Leigh Ann said, the carrot-coriander-soup in your school is definitely worth to try at home and you would probably let us know :)

  3. Very nice drawing of your lunch! It sounds quite good, so long as the portions were adequate, which seems to have been the case.

Don't forget the camera tomorrow, eh?

  4. Please remember your camera tomorrow!!! We love your drawings too but we are more interested in seeing the ACTUAL food :) However, today seemed like a good and very filling lunch.
I can't believe that a 10 month old can eat all of that food..he must be a very healthy little boy!

    2. Its amazing how much babes can eat and what they can eat. Thats why the portions for the primary school children are so shocking on some of the days Veg has documented!

  13. very positive comments on your school meal, no more or less honest than you would expect of a nine year old! well done, well written. shame about all the negative resonse in the press, as for the council they must feel guilty or they wounldn't be jumping up and down..they should be supporting this and taking the positives from it.

  14. Oh Dannys meal looks amazing! Well done to his nursery think they could give our schools tips! :)

Fantastic pic Veg keep it up! :) Makes me wonder what my kids are getting for school lunch, never thought much about it as the menu looks good x Well done, great blog at such a young age. Do not let the councils negative views put you down, you will make a great journalist one day!

  15. Holy crow. Our nurseries here could learn something. My friend was told to stop sending fruit for lunches (she has to provide her daughters) and send more cheese puffs.

  17. Hi Veg,

I believe you took this photo from my blog at this link. http://www.gravytrainblog.com/the-gravy-train/2011/10/domi-arigato-mr-bento.html It's fine for you to use my photos, but please credit the source. I noticed you cropped out the copyright source.

    Thanks,

    Ann

    1. I'm sorry, but why do you believe that it is Veg who took the photo from your blog? Her account says that the photo was sent to her by someone from Spain, and the correspondent has included other information too (e.g. a child's name, and the cost of the meal in Euros). I suggest that this someone was the person who copied your photo. I also suggest that Veg has not made this information up. Perhaps she is owed more than one apology today...

    2. The pictures are identical and cropped but Veg did say that they were sent in. Do you really expect a 9 year old to inspect the validity of the pictures she receives?

      Delete
    3. How rude!! Veg stated that she received the email containing the picture from a mother in Spain. How is she to know that the person sending the email has used the pictures from your site?

So please, before you start accusing Veg of taking photos from your blog, read her post and you'll see her source!

      Insulting to say the least.

    4. Hey, Veg, I'm sorry -- I misunderstood the post. I didn't raalize that it was someone else who took my photo and sent it in as their own. Either way, I'm not upset that you posted the photo -- just wanted to let you know that it wasn't sent by me, and the person who took the photo did so without my permission. Sorry about that.

  18. The "teddy bear bowls" are probably a Panda shaped Bento Box, common in Japan. They are traditionally filled with lots of fruits and veggies (sometimes sushi), and usually some form of starch such as rice or cous cous. I love using them for my daughters lunches, they're so cute!

  19. Beautiful nursery food. Hope this is inspiring some of our nurseries to provide something so fresh and appealing. Gorgeous.

  20. Except, Hungry Lady, that isn't a nursery meal from Spain. See biscuit wheel's post above. It's a meal she made for her child, and was stolen from her blog.

  21. To be fair to Veg the photo and description could have been sent in as described. While I applaud the cause and effect of this blog I don't expect a nine year old, or her father, to have quite foreseen the mass effect it has all taken on in the last few days.

  23. I certainly didn't think Veg stole it. I assumed the person who sent it to her did. There was no reason for veg or her dad to suspect it wasn't what it seemed.
How pathetic of the person who did pass it off though. And I can't understand what they expected to get from it.

  24. I think the boxes are called bento boxes, they're super cute.

  25. Não me parece tão ruim os alimentos, aqui no Brasil são poucas escolas que oferecem merenda tão diversificada.
