Chocolate Milk Banished!

Hi Veg! It’s Ian again. Today I ate something totally different. Today I wasn’t that late for lunch so I got something decent. Right now, I’m eating a chicken sandwich, some canned peaches, lettuce and drinking low-fat milk. There isn’t any longer chocolate milk at school because my mom and other parents requested that they not serve it and the principals agreed to banish it from our school.

The lettuce was a 10/10 with no dressing. The chicken inside the bun tasted like the same chicken nuggets. They didn’t taste like real chicken. I could have tried a beef gordita or a sunflower jelly sandwich on goldfish bread whatever that it.

    1. Sunflower jelly might be what's also called Sunbutter. That's a peanut butter substitute.

  2. I think you are really lucky that your dad usually makes your lunch! I feel sorry for the kids that have to eat school dinners every day at your school and I am also not impressed by the cardboard box you get it in! What's that all about?! Everything must get mixed up. The sunflower jelly sandwich sounds intriguing though!

  3. Why do they put your lunches on a cardboard tray? It seems like you have to try to put everything right in the corners to keep all the bits from ending up smooshed together in the middle - and it also seems like that doesn't really work. Did the peach juice end up making the burger bun soggy?

  4. Don't think I can find the proper words to describe how sorry I feel for You, Ian..

Google gave me this link for the goldfish bread:

I dont't think that sunflower jelly goldfish sandwich would have been a real alternative..

.. but the beef gordita might have been.. depending on how it was done. Considering how that "chicken sandwich" was done, I guess even the gordita might have been awfull, too.

Guess if I had to choose between the options available to You, I'd stick to salad and milk.

  5. What's the matter with all this canned fruit? Don't they serve fresh fruit sometimes?
I guess the chicken burger tasted the same as the chicken nuggets because it is probably the same reclaimed chicken made into a different shape! Probably more batter than any meat.

I am sorry that your burger will soon be soggy because of the sugar sirop from the fruit running into it... I must really say it does not look very appetising all served together.

Why did you say that the lettuce was a 10/10 without dressing? Is the dressing also full of various additives? I like my lettuce with dressing and there is nothing wrong with olive oil, mustard and vinegar (french style) or simply olive oil and lemon juice (italian style). When I am given lettuce to eat with nothing, I think they believe I am a rabbit!

  6. Eat the cardboard chicken burger quick, before the peaches make it all soggy! :( There should be little paper cups for wet foods and sauces if the school doesn't use plastic trays or china dishes. My daughter says this looks exactly like the lunch served at her school in Washington State.

  7. Oh dear - these cardboard boxes are gross. Who is responsible for these?! (Just visualizing some stereotypical movie villain...) They remind me of feeding troughs for pigs or something.

So this mess is what one of the richest countries on this planet calls food which is appropriate for pupils?! What a disgrace! This can't be serious! :(
I remember how everyone in my school used to complain about its canteen - but compared to the above picture our cooks pampered us with first class gourmet cuisine on finest china plates...

  8. Gee! I'm glad there wasn't any hair on this sad meal. No chocolate milk, either. What's wrong with chocolate milk ? It's the same milk with or without the chocolate. Fresh peaches may have made it a little easier going down. Oh well, there is always tomorrows meal.

    1. Evelyn, chocolate (and other flavored) milk has a lot of added sugar that regular milk doesn't have.

That's why many schools are no longer serving them.

    2. Chocolate milk was the only kind I drank as a kid. Hated milk. (Now I'm lactose intolerant so maybe that was a hint, lol!) As far as I'm concerned, if the rest of the meal is healthy, a little sugar isn't a horrible thing.

  9. I've noticed something interesting among the girls I eat lunch with and I wonder if it is true anywhere else. The girls I mentor are ages 11 and 12 and they are in 6th grade. I have lunch with them once a week and all this school year they all get a milk or juice at lunch and almost never drink it! Our school has a wide variety of milks: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, plain milk (all low fat) and juices: apple, orange, fruit punch. I've asked them about it and they said they would rather drink water from the water fountain later; that they don't like milk or juice. The cafeteria makes you get a drink regardless of whether you want it or not and it ends up being thrown away. It seems like such a waste. I see the trouble Ian's parents went to in order to have it removed from the school- is there an age where kids start to give it up on their own?

    1. That's really interesting. Our school district is supposed to serve water but they can't figure out how to do it yet, at least not at our school yet. Those girls are smart, I hope it's not too loose weight, but actually because it's better for them. More than half the kids bring school lunch from home and many are pretty decent. Ian's mom

  11. Hi Ian

Thanks for your blog. It's still a poor lunch isn't it? It would look better if it was served on plates! I'd love to know what a gordita is and goldfish bread if any of your friends know.

  13. Wow - these lunches in San Diego are depressing! What a bummer. Get your act together, California!

  14. Hi Ian - Goldfish bread is thin bread cut into the shape of a Goldfish cracker. I tried it once when it was new and was unimpressed.
