Horse meat in School Food

Hi.

Everyone is talking about horse meat being found in school food in Scotland. Lots of people have asked me about it. I'd like to answer you all at once!

I think it's terrible that horse meat is in schools with no one knowing about it. We don't know where the horses came from and how they were looked after. We should change what we eat if we don't know what it is or where it comes from.

PS I have a report on our kitchen in Lirangwe to share soon!

  1. Indeed it is very worrying about what has been found (in an Ayrshire school from memory).

I have probably eaten horse steak, when I lived in France many years ago, not exactly 'deliberately', but my memory is that it was very nice, but a bit different (sweeter) than a beef steak.

As a matter of interest this report has just appeared yesterday in the Highland Council website (I live in the Highland Region so often look at it), about school meals throughout the Highland Region. Assuming what the report states, and it seems pretty categorical, is correct then it would appear that sourcing of meat products for consumption in schools throughout the Highland Region is admirably clear and quite local local:

  2. Yes Martha, it is a huge big scandal horsemeat in our food. But then what do people expect when they buy cheap, industrial meat?

I do not believe the supermarkets did not know what was going on when they have very strict control over their suppliers.

I was talking to two butchers and they both said, it was common knowledge.

If you want quality meat, then you go to a quality local butcher, or as you do, off your own farm.

  4. it's perfectly reasonable for you and others to know where your food comes from. at the very least, it's a potential health/safty issue.

if you're like a lot of people, you don't want to eat anything that's been tortured/neglected/etc prior to and during slaghter. many people want the slaughter of their meat to be as humane as possible.

  5. It's really a shame that this happened all over Europe. But as you said, it is more a scandal not having the choice.
And some of the horses where treated with meds not suitable for humans. And it's quite easy to make a lasange or casserole by your own. I published several recipies that shows how easy it is.
