I'm so excited!

Thanks to the JAM classroom in New York it's been a mini world tour in a week! I have really enjoyed all the lunch boxes. I don't want to pick a favourite because they are all so good!

I have been talking to lots of people about going to Malawi. I'm talking a lot about it because I am excited about it. I have been told food on planes isn't very good but I hope they are wrong. I have never eaten a meal on a plane before. I don't think a plane has a kitchen it must be made on the ground and reheated in the air. I will rate my meals on the plane!

It's amazing how the kitchen has improved from a little shelter with a thatched roof to a building with walls and a metal roof. The next picture you see of the Friends of NeverSeconds kitchen will have me in it. I will be there! I will tell them how it happened that a blog built a kitchen.

I can't wait to meet all the children. I have packed some footballs and wind up torches. We don't have any Kwatcha for Malawi yet so we've no money. Dad says it's ok. Soon I start taking antimalarial tablets. I have to have 4 a day but my sister only has to have 1. It is because I am not quite an adult and not a small child either.

If you have any African themed meals please send them in for next week to neverseconds@gmail.com along with any questions for Malawi!

Mutsale bwino! (Good bye in Chichewa.)

  1. Hi VEG,

Some planes do have a mini-kitchen! Towards the end of this video you can see a frying pan on a plane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH_fSe8ZY-U&feature=related But they only cook for people in first class, everyone else gets reheated meals. I've never had a meal that's cooked on a plane, I hope you do because you deserve to fly first class after raising all that money.

    1. Veg seems very taken by the toaster and whether it pops the toast into the air!

  2. When you go, if the airline doesn't upgrade you all to 1st class as VIPs (Very Important Paynes) I'll be very disappointed!

    Have a great time!

  3. Airline food is indeed no tasty, but there is some science working against it, and it is definitely made on the ground and heated in the air. Apparently back in the day airlines (or at least PanAm) had real kitchens on board but no longer. Congrats on the near completion of the kitchen :) and good luck on the trip!

    1. Quite a change from a story told of a long flight of a Sunderland flying boat from Oban (just North of Lochgilphead) during WWII, taking a VIP to Greenland. One of the crew managed to cook steaks in a sauce for everyone on board using one saucepan. The VIP was so impressed that he asked for the recipe - he was told that it was secret (actually all just thrown in the pan and left to simmer/stew for a few hours!).

  6. Hey VEG,

The plane food isn't necessarily bad. I always loved to travel, especially by plane cause the car makes me carsick sometimes. I am 27 now but when I was about your age sometimes my parents would put me on a plane and an uncle or aunt would pick me up in another city for holidays. The flight attendants were usually really cool. And I remember that orange juice from a box was something special I only had in flights, it wasn't popular yet in Brazil by then. I also liked the food.
Even now most times I fly to Europe I take Air France, which has Champagne in the Economy class and a piece of my favorite cheese, Brie.
And once I flew Japan Airlines to the US, which had japanese food, delicious.

So don't worry about the food. The only problem is that sometimes it takes too long to come and I get hungry waiting for it, so you could take a little snack with you. Oh, and sometimes the bread comes really cold. Other than that, it's ok.

    Enjoy your trip!

  7. Good luck Martha and Dad! Can't wait to see what you send back. Take some pencils, and maybe some little notebooks, too. They're cheap, small and rare where you're going. :-)

  9. I love airplane food! :D Must be the only one... Everything else is always good but I hate lasagna, yak! Luckily I've only had it ones. Otherwise planefood is good, main/salad/bread and dessert. It's made on the ground and served very hot.

  12. Hello Martha! Congratulations for everything you have been achieving. It would be great if our Prime Minister saw what you have done and followed your example. Unfortunately, in New Zealand we have 270 thousand children who go to school hungry, everyday, and he doesn't think that this is an important matter that needs to be solved. Once again, congratulations for your initiative! God bless you! :D

  13. Veg,

I would like to ask your permission to write the airline that you are traveling on, to see if I could get you and your family upgraded to FIRST class. As I believe that you are the best example of what it means to be "first class".

    1. Dear Thomas,

Thank you for your kind comment. We are naturally nervous about the trip and I think we might feel more at home in economy than First Class!

      It's a wonderful thought though,

      Thanks,

      Veg's Dad

  14. Hi Martha, I am an American flight attendant who has been following your blog since it went viral, yes I even donated! Congrats and well done! You are right, the food on most planes is not very good and mostly pre-made then served cold or reheated in flight. However, international flights have much better food than domestic here in the States, and some foreign airlines have better food than others. I had taken some pictures of food that I serve in flight to our 1st Class passengers only but I misplaced them. I will have to send you some more before you go. Have a good trip, you have done amazing things!

    1. Thank you for your kind comment and donation. Look forward to the pics! Going to set up a page of questions to ask in Malawi so anything you'd like Veg to find out let her know. She has a notebook and will be reporting!

  15. Martha,

You can have a look at different airline meals at this link: http://www.airlinemeals.net/
The site also takes submissions so NeverSeconds could even cross post some pictures!

  16. Martha,

The web site http://www.airlinemeals.net/ have hundreds of pictures of airline meals. You can probably find a couple for the airlines you will take on your trip. The site also posts pictures sent in from passengers. You could cross post your meals on NeverSeconds and airline meals.net, a kind of photo BOGO. Have a great trip!

    :-)
