The new things from yesterday, the radishes, the mini tomatoes and the shreddings weren't to be seen today. Maybe it was just because my class was last in the queue and I was the last in the school to be served. I was looking forward to the radishes because I have not had one for a while.

If soup is on and some sort of cake and you are having some sort of roll, wrap or sandwich you are allowed to have soup and a cake. The soup today was potato and leek. I really like all the school's soups. My roll was white bread with butter and grated cheese. I am not sure what cheese it is. I had cucumber and lettuce with it. Normally all the cakes are iced but today we had a choice of iced or not. I chose iced!

  1. Hi Martha. Do you know whether the soup is made in the school kitchen or if it's made from packets? Perhaps you could ask. I'm wondering why the salad wasn't already in the roll with the cheese.
I love your blog. Keep up the good work.

  2. I do hope that the 'new things' seen yesterday weren't just a bit of window-dressing now that the press are involved.

Pity this is the Internet, where no addresses are involved - I find myself wanting to mail Veg a large lunch with proper meat and veg. Let's say tomato soup, roast beef, cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes and a salad consisting of more than a few dispirited slices of cucumber and a carrot scraping or two. A nice American brownie for dessert, to make it a lunch a child can do a bit of proper studying on.

    1. Very kind. Veg eats very well at home from our small farm. Touched by your thoughtfulness.

    2. Dear Veg's Dad:

I'm quite sure Veg eats properly at home! My comment was intended both to give your local council a clue about what growing children should eat, and to point out the difference between that and what these children are getting. I have not seen what I consider an adequate amount of protein in Veg's lunches in several days. Since the children in Veg's school must study all day, better lunches would be helpful, I should think. At the very least, I'd like to see them get something closer to £2 worth of food for the £2 charged.

  4. It seems that your meals are slipping back again. 2 days in a row now and no protein on the plate.
Soup & a roll is a snack not a meal.
Have a look at my school meals

  5. I have to agree... this is an afterschool snack, something to tide you over between lunch and supper. With all respect to the catering staff, this is a weak effort at food that is supposed to sustain and nourish a growing kid.

  6. There's not enough to fill a hungry child there.

  7. The past two days' meals have contained cheese. That's a protein. But I agree, not enough of it.

  8. Would love to respond with a picture of what my 9 year old used to eat for her hot school dinner, but it was so poor I decided to give her a packed lunch instead. Glad you've put the public in mind of nutrition again so hopefully things will change.

  10. We are a 14 y.o. secondary class from Caspe (Spain), we are reading your blog in English class with our teacher. Your lunch photos are amazing!! Aren’t you hungry?

We also had lunch at the school canteen when we were in primary school, this is a normal day menu for lunch with 2 courses and desert: rice with tomatoe, chicken with chips, and a youghurt. On special days we even drink coke! Some of us think meals were homemade, healthy and delicious!!But some others also found pieces of hair in our portion of bread!!! disgusting!! Anyway, all of us prefer to eat at home!!We have been studying a food and drink lesson in English class, and we have published recipes you can visit in our blog.

  22. Hi,Marytha.I used google translation, hope it will not deviate from Chinese intent too.
I finally understand why the food reform heard that your country is so unpopular.Unhealthy if these foods seem neither delicious and expensive.Do the chefs that reduce the quantity of food will be able to achieve weight loss results? In Taiwan, if you want to lose weight, the doctor recommended exercise and diet control.Diet to eat less sugar, fried food and cold food - contains the raw food and ice cream, Chinese medicine practitioners believe that raw food and ice cream will hinder metabolism.Eat the food but did not break out, no wonder the fat.Night after a 8:00 not eat something. As long as the diet and sustained exercise for about three months, the effect is absolutely amazing. In general, excessive Eat less but more likely to cause obesity.

  23. I don't think the food your school provides is enough for you. In Taiwan, shcools provide enough food for kids who need energy eveyday.
Kids get rice, meat, vegetables, soup and sometimes desserts for lunch. They can get as much food as they want. Your school really should do something to improve the meals.
